Gas Holders

Name: Gas Holders
Location: Kings Cross, London
Client: Jonathan Tuckey Design

Whilst many elements of the elegant interiors are bespoke, the use of industrial materials such as resin, steel, brass, fumed oak and precast concrete, pay tribute to the building’s origins.

At first sight, the design requirements for the interior ironmongery may have seemed conflicting: it needed to be unassuming whilst also reflecting the influence of the ornate Victorian engineering that exists within the buildings. Franchi worked closely with Jonathan Tuckey Design to fashion a suite of understated handles and complementary ironmongery that work in harmony with the elaborate surroundings.

The project required two types of handles. The apartment entrance doors feature polished brass handles reminiscent of old industrial breaker handles. Handles for the internal doors of each apartment are waxed brass, wedge-shaped levers on backplates. These are designed to patinate naturally, enabling each one to take on a unique finish in keeping with the heritage of the building.

Tom Goodall of Argent LLP, the developer responsible for the Kings Cross regeneration project, commented: “Our goal was to deliver a truly unique, residential building of exceptional architectural quality; one which was fitting to both its setting, in the heart of the newly revitalised King’s Cross masterplan, and its context, being encompassed by the Grade II listed gasholder frames that had been a distinguishing feature of the King’s Cross landscape for well over a century. To do this, the design team was asked to challenge every aspect of the design, from the entrance experience with its reflecting water feature to the bespoke, solid brass door handles. What they delivered, responded to our high expectations by doing exactly that.”
